It’s a Fickle World When the native people saw the creature (viper) hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer. Though he has escaped from the sea, justice has not allowed him to live”…But when they had waited a long time and saw no misfortune come to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god. Acts 28: 4, 6 (ESV) How fickle we can be when we don’t have The Rock, Jesus, in our lives on a daily basis serving as our eternal guide and enduring foundation. In these few verses we see how we can effortlessly switch from making slanderous accusations and falsely condemning someone to mistakenly praising and revering them without blinking an eye. How volatile, impressionable, and thoroughly lost we are without Jesus. Life can be quicksand without him. There really is no lasting confidence or real stability in life without him. There is no biblical wisdom to draw from or strong foundation from which to make wise choices or sound decisions if he and his Word, are missing from our lives. How fearful and uncertain life must be without him. Does any of this sound familiar? Don’t feel alone. Many Christians live through the same volatile emotions and unstable life experiences as the nonbelievers do. They know Jesus intellectually and may have had a salvation experience but they have not entirely involved him in their daily lives. And I’m not just talking about having experienced the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. I’m talking about living each day having absolute faith and trust in Jesus. Faith comes by hearing the Good News and believing it, but complete trust comes from knowing Jesus and understanding how he moves and responds when confronted by different and challenging circumstances. How then do we get to know and completely trust Jesus so that life isn’t a roller-coaster ride everyday? We can only find this level of trust and stability by studying, meditating on, and having fellowship with him in his Word everyday because God is alive in his Word. As we begin to earnestly study the Bible we learn that the experiences and the emotions we feel today are the same as were experienced by all the early Jewish believers, and by the Christians following Jesus. God speaks to us and leads us through a variety of life’s many challenges in the Bible. As we relate to these Biblical events and the feelings, emotions, and values of the people who lived through them, we learn that God is eternally faithful and that Jesus is worthy of our complete trust. We begin to truly understand who Jesus is. He is his Word. Dear Lord Jesus, make your Word come alive for us today and everyday, and in doing so give us the passion to learn more about your nature and everlasting love. Help us grow in wisdom and maturity as we study and fellowship with you daily. Give us the desire to participate in a Church Bible Study Group so we can share our fellowship experience and see how you touch others through your Word. Amen. Meditatons by Fred Fischer |
